Frequently Asked Questions

Health, Safety & Therapeutic Practices

What should I expect during my first massage therapy session?

Your first session begins with a brief intake so we can discuss your goals, areas of concern, relevant health history, injuries, and any preferences you have for pressure or techniques. From there, I create a session specifically around your needs. You will always have the ability to communicate throughout the massage about pressure, positioning, temperature, or anything else that would make you more comfortable.

Do I need to disclose my health history?

Yes. Please disclose any relevant medical conditions, recent injuries, surgeries, medications, pregnancy, or other health concerns that could affect your massage. You do not need to share anything that is unrelated to your care, but having accurate information allows me to work safely and appropriately. If you are unsure whether something is relevant, it is always better to mention it.

What if I have chronic pain or an old injury?

Absolutely let me know. Massage can often be adapted to accommodate chronic pain and previous injuries. We will discuss what you are experiencing, what movements or positions aggravate it, and what your goals are before beginning. Depending on the situation, I may modify pressure, positioning, techniques, or the areas being addressed. Massage is not a substitute for medical diagnosis or treatment, and I may recommend consulting a healthcare professional when appropriate.

Can I receive a massage if I am pregnant?

Birchbark BodyWorks does not currently offer prenatal or pregnancy massage. If you are pregnant, please consult your healthcare provider about appropriate care options and seek a massage therapist who specializes in prenatal massage.

Licensing & Professional Standards

Are you a licensed and certified massage therapist?

Yes. I am licensed to practice massage therapy in both Vermont and New Hampshire. I have also passed the MBLEx, the Massage and Bodywork Licensing Examination. My professional training includes Swedish massage, deep tissue massage, myofascial release, and therapeutic massage techniques.

What safety and sanitation protocols are maintained?

Client safety, cleanliness, and sanitation are priorities. Fresh linens are used for each client, massage surfaces and frequently touched equipment are cleaned and disinfected between appointments, and proper hand hygiene is maintained throughout each session. Equipment and supplies are kept clean and organized, and linens are handled and stored appropriately between uses.

Traveling & Mobile Massage Services

Do you offer mobile or in-home massage services?

Yes! Birchbark BodyWorks offers mobile and in-home massage services. I can bring the necessary massage equipment directly to your home or another appropriate private location.

What is required to set up a mobile massage in my home?

A clean, comfortable, and reasonably private space is all that is generally needed. I bring the massage table and necessary equipment. Ideally, there should be enough room to safely move around the table and a comfortable environment with a manageable temperature and minimal interruptions.

Is there a travel fee for mobile appointments?

Yes. A flat $50 travel fee applies for mobile appointments within a 15-mile radius. For locations farther outside the standard service area, please reach out for a free quote.

Events, Corporate Wellness & Parties

What types of events do you provide massage services for?

Birchbark BodyWorks can provide massage services for a wide variety of events, including:

  • Corporate wellness days
  • Private parties and retreats
  • Bachelorette weekends and bridal events
  • Birthday gatherings
  • Wellness retreats and getaways
  • Festivals and community events
  • Brand activations and VIP experiences
  • Athletic and sporting events
  • Employee appreciation events
  • Other private or group gatherings

How does on-site event massage work?

For most events, massage chair sessions are a convenient option that allows guests to remain fully clothed while receiving focused work on the upper body, neck, shoulders, and back. Sessions can typically be customized to approximately 10–30 minutes per guest, depending on the event and schedule.

For retreats, VIP experiences, or events where more space and privacy are available, full massage table sessions can also be arranged.

How far in advance should I book massage services for an event?

I recommend booking at least 4-6 weeks in advance whenever possible. Larger events, corporate wellness days, and events requiring multiple therapists should be booked as early as possible to ensure availability and allow enough time for planning.

Can you provide multiple massage therapists for larger events?

Depending on the size and needs of the event, additional licensed massage therapists may be coordinated. Larger events should be booked as far in advance as possible so staffing and scheduling can be arranged.

Can you customize massage services for my event?

Absolutely. Event services can be customized based on the number of guests, event length, location, available space, desired session length, and overall experience you are looking to create. Contact Birchbark BodyWorks for a free quote and customized event proposal.
